3 Ways Garrett Became a Thought Leader and Industry Influencer

Garrett Gunderson, a keynote speaker, on stage at one of his many speaking events each year

If you’ve been a part of the Wealth Factory family for any amount of time, then you probably are familiar with our founder and Chief Wealth Architect, Garrett Gunderson.

Maybe you first learned of Garrett as the author of What Would the Rockefellers Do? or the national bestselling books Killing Sacred Cows and 5 Day Weekend. Or from his columns on Forbes.com and Entrepreneur.com, where he has reached over 1,000,000 views.

Or you may have heard him speak on one of the hundreds of podcast interviews he’s given over the years, or even seen him speak in person on one of the many stages he’s invited to speak at each year.

Sometimes — even to the Builders here at Wealth Factory — it seems like Garrett is everywhere these days.

He is a true thought leader and industry influencer. And while it’s taken him 20 years of hard work to get to where he is today, he actually became an industry influencer in his community very quickly — despite being decades younger than many of the others in his profession at the time.

How Did Garrett Do It?

Garrett shares the entire story of his rise to becoming an industry influencer in a step-by-step way in our SCALE masterclass, How to Become an Industry Influencer Who Gets All the Referrals, Media-Attention and Top Customers.

But here are 3 quick tips Garrett used to accelerate his rise to industry influencer quickly:

#1: Garrett Became a Specialist

Garrett entered the finance industry while still in college. Upon graduation, he had several job offers from top firms, but as a natural entrepreneur, he chose to start his own business right away instead.

Garrett didn’t want to be “just another” service provider in the industry. He wanted to be the best. So while others were comfortable serving their clients like normal, Garrett made sure to get as much education as he could — and soon became an expert in the latest financial software at the time.

This gave Garrett an instant edge over other providers.

#2: Garrett Wasn’t Afraid of Competition

Even though Garrett gained an edge over his competitors, he didn’t hide his expertise from the competition. In fact, he offered to teach them what he knew.

Many people thought he was crazy to be helping the competition, but it actually helped build his reputation in the industry and he got more referrals than ever before. It was also a first step to becoming an industry influencer in the community.

#3: Garrett Took a Stand

In 2008, when Garrett wrote Killing Sacred Cows: Overcoming the Financial Myths that Are Destroying Your Financial Prosperity, he challenged many long-standing beliefs about money, debt, risk, savings and more.

Garrett wasn’t afraid to take a stand for what he felt was right, and it paid off. The book clearly struck a nerve, shooting up the New York Times bestseller list and putting Garrett on the map nationally.

Where’s the Opportunity?

It’s easy for any business or service provider to get lost in the crowd. You can spend a fortune on advertising and hope to build your business that way.

But sometimes it’s easier and much more rewarding to stick out from the crowd by becoming a thought leader and Industry Influencer. Garrett is living proof that it’s possible, even in a short amount of time.

So if you’re interested in becoming an industry influencer who gets more referrals, more customers, and free attention and advertising from the media, here are 3 ways to get started:

  1. Look for ways to differentiate your business or specialize: Garrett first built a reputation as an expert in the community by mastering the latest financial software at the time. Another example is a dentist who becomes a Sleep Apnea expert — by specializing in an area that other dentists (or businesses) do not, you become the expert. And then other business owners refer business and customers to you because of that expertise.
  2. Competition isn’t what you think it is: A scarcity mindset sees competition as something to be afraid of. An abundance mindset doesn’t see competition at all, but someone to work with and get referrals and customers from.
  3. Stay tuned for next week: As mentioned earlier, Garrett shares his entire story of becoming an Industry Influencer in one of our 7 SCALE masterclasses — plus the repeatable step-by-step process you can follow to become an industry influencer, too.
Our SCALE business growth program retails for $1,379, but we have something special planned for you next week that we think will pleasantly surprise you. So make sure to watch your email next week.
