When I first started hiring people for my company in my early 20s, I went through a long period of only seeming to be able to find really incompetent employees. Have you ever felt this way? The first Must-Do for Hiring The Right People is: Hire before you need the position filled.

It’s better to have a deep bench than to overwork your current employees. The worst thing you can do for your current staff is to ask them to do jobs that are above and beyond their current role and pay, especially if that is for an indefinite amount of time. Short-term is okay, but it’s really not ideal. 

Beware this common misconception: Many business owners STILL try to equate overworking as a show of loyalty to the company. The truth is quite the opposite. Overworking leads to regret, resentment, sloppy work, and eventual burnout. 

When a new person is hired before the role desperately needs to be filled, it allows for ample time to train correctly. (Be sure to check out my videos on team training for more on this topic!) 

The second Must-Do for Hiring The Right People is: When interviewing a possible new hire, put yourself in your clients’ shoes.

Consider what role you are hiring this person for, and what specific clientele this new hire will be communicating with on a regular basis. Would your client enjoy talking to this person? Would your client buy from this person? And most importantly: Would your clients’ lives be improved by this person? 

Beware this common misconception: Entrepreneurs often make the mistake of only looking at their potential new hires through their own eyes. The future growth of your company will always be served by remembering that you are NOT your clients. Before sitting down for an interview, take a few moments to really reflect on your company’s clientele. What do they need? What are their first priorities? Let your own first impressions take a backseat, and try to keep the POV of your clients at the forefront of your mind when meeting potential new hires.
